SCAA ACS 2024 Rheology of Paints and Coatings brought to you by Anton Paar

Rheology of Paints & Coatings

Relevant for: Paints; Coatings; Varnishes; Rheology; Thixotropy; Drying; Curing

The International Academy of Rheology by Anton Paar offers you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and to improve your skills in the field of rheology. The program ranges from seminars to workshops, webinars, eLearning courses and technical literature.

Introduction

High and diverse demands are placed on paints and coatings – simply because of the different applications and situations for which they are used. This high degree of complexity can also be traced back to the many different particulates and liquids that are processed. In order to develop new formulations, but also to ensure consistent quality during production, it is necessary to have a precise understanding of the materials and their behavior.

In addition, they need to remain stable during pumping processes and storage, as well as after application with brushes, rollers, spray guns, etc. Thus, rheological measurements of paints and coatings are crucial for evaluating their quality.

This workshop aims to introduce how rheological tests can be useful for calculating the shear rate which will affect a paint or coating sample during application, evaluating whether the viscosity values of a paint or coating will fit the requirements after application, and to measure the long-term storage stability of paints and coatings

Target Groups

QC operators, formulation chemists, and technicians looking for an exciting introduction into measuring paints and coatings using rheometry.  Also ideal for those who want a refresher on rheology.

Contents

  • Basics of Rheology and viscous behaviour

  • Viscoelastic behaviour
  • Definitions: shear strain, deformation, shear modulus
  • Amplitude and frequency sweeps
  • Time, temperature and humidity dependent behavior

About the speaker

Dr. Ashish Kumar is Sales & Product Manager (Business Unit Characterisation) at Anton Paar Australia and Anton Paar New Zealand. The Characterisation portfolio includes Rheometry, Mechanical Surface Testing, Particle Characterisation, Surface Area and Porosity, Raman Spectroscopy , XRD and SAXS. He is responsible for technical support, application testing, product management and marketing activities for the different product lines, and has been since 2013. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from The University of Melbourne (Australia) and has 14 years of rheology experience, five of those in the field of mineral processing and tailings disposal.

How to register - there are two ways

1.  Register as a seminar add-on via the normal registration link (Register Now button at the bottom of the page). Use this option if you are attending other Conference events - eg Full Time Registration or any combination of Part Time or Social events. This option will appear regardless of whether you are member or non member. The price is the same for both.

2. If you are only coming the to seminar and/or you want to simply register multiple attendees at once, you will need to register via the SCAA Event Registration link below (or click on the image to the left) - not the main Conference registration. You don't need to be a member and you can register more than one person on the same link. You will receive an email confirmation once registered. Any issues please contact Maree on the Registrations email
