Presentation Title: Waterproofing coatings in 2025 where are we?
Presentation Abstract: Waterproofing technology continues to evolve, and with it, the testing methodologies that validate product performance. This presentation explores key advancements and considerations in waterproofing standards, focusing on their practical implications and relevance to real-world applications in 2025. A significant topic of discussion is film thickness and its impact on results after immersion or exposure, emphasizing how accurate application affects long-term performance. Additionally, the importance of compatibility testing across multiple substrates is highlighted, with adhesion as a critical component for ensuring system reliability. Drawing from
European testing practices, we’ll discuss the introduction of AS ISO 13007.5, which sets new benchmarks in adhesion, crack bridging, and exposure testing, filling critical gaps in Australian standards. The presentation will also address the differences between Australian and EN standards, particularly focusing on water impermeability and crack bridging, key aspects often
overlooked in current Australian waterproofing standards. While elongation and tensile strength remain vital performance indicators, we’ll explore how interpreting these results— particularly correlations between elongation at break and tensile strength after exposure—can reveal potential long-term product vulnerabilities. Common misconceptions surrounding membrane classification will be clarified, emphasizing that higher elongation does not necessarily equate to better performance. Real-world relevance will be further explored through the importance of crack bridging, cyclic movement, and chemical resistance, showcasing their critical roles in addressing building movement and exposure scenarios. Finally, we’ll discuss the distinction between peel and adhesion strength, emphasizing their unique contributions to product durability. By addressing these key topics, this presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of waterproofing performance and testing, helping industry professionals make Informed decisions for product development and application. This session will deliver insights critical for manufacturers, specifiers, and industry stakeholders, bridging gaps between standards and practical performance.
