Presentation Title: Recycled PET Alkyd & Polyester Resins: Transforming PET Waste into High‑Quality Coating Resins
Presentation Abstract: Plastic waste is a growing global issue, with more than 500 billion plastic bottles used each year and about 80% ending up in landfills or oceans, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose. To help address this challenge, allnex has developed a new generation of solventborne (SB) alkyd and polyester resins made with recycled PET (rPET) from post consumer bottles. This approach turns discarded plastics into valuable coating raw materials—without compromising performance.
allnex rPET resins can incorporate 5–20% rPET in resin solids, using up to maximum 72 recycled bottles in every 5 kg of resin. Testing shows that these rPET enhanced resins maintain or even improve key performance properties such as hardness, gloss, adhesion, flexibility, and weathering resistance across a wide range of applications, including automotive, decorative trim paints, and industrial wood coatings.
Using rPET also delivers real sustainability benefits. The technology helps achieve Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reductions of 3.7–9.7%, with some products reaching up to 50% total better carbon content. Together, the allnex rPET liquid resin solutions offer a practical step toward circularity—providing environmentally responsible materials while still delivering the high performance expected in modern coatings.
