Presentation Title: Functional Silicones for High-Performance Architectural Coatings
Presentation Abstract: Architectural coatings are vital in protecting and decorating substrates. Good adhesion on substrate, durability, and resistance to damage from environmental exposure are the basic requirements for most coating systems. With growing market of premium paints and competition between manufacturers to differentiate their products, performance targets are continuously increasing. Silicone polymers are well known for very low surface energy, higher hydrophobicity, remarkable durability and flexibility, which makes it an appealing chemistry for high performance paints.
This presentation will highlight functional-silicone additives that can enable high performance waterborne interior/exterior paints and masonry sealer for construction applications. Different from traditional Silane/Silicone oligomers or polymers, functional silicones have one or more organic functionalities that can bring in various performance benefits as well as help improve compatibility in different coating systems. These solutions can enhance several performance properties like anti-scuffing, scrub resistance, anti-blocking, hydrophobicity, efflorescence resistance, UV stability to delay chalking and color fading, and more. These solutions can also be considered as alternatives for PFAS-containing materials which have growing concerns over environment and health impact.
