Presentation Title: Discovering the past to inform the future
Presentation Abstract: Prior to any conservation or renovation process on heritage listed buildings and structures, it is common practice to carry out significant investigation to discover the colour of the originally applied coating system. This is necessary to enable accurate information to be assembled for the Heritage Architect for presentation to the asset owner in the specification documents prior to the commencement of the work. Various methods have been employed in recent years with many highly technical equipment and processes used, enabling a complete history of the colours used. Some historical knowledge and interpretation is required during the collection and subsequent evaluation processes. This presentation collects together some examples that have been undertaken over the years and a Case Study of one relatively recently completed project. The works and process methodologies will be described that illustrate the collection of the data needed that eventually informed the development of a complete conservation and renovation process undertaken on a rural NSW structure with examples of the final result.
